What is the significance of the New Yam Festival (Iri Ji)?

The New Yam Festival (Iri Ji or Iriji Ohuru) is an annual festival celebrated in August or September across Igbo land. It marks the end of the farming season and the beginning of a new agricultural cycle. It is a time for thanksgiving to Ala (Earth Goddess) for a bountiful harvest.
