What are the major cultural beliefs and traditions of the Igbo people?

Igbo culture is deeply rooted in traditions such as:

  • Respect for elders and communal decision-making.
  • The Igbo traditional religion, which includes the worship of Chukwu (God), Ala (earth goddess), and various deities and ancestors.
  • The New Yam Festival (Iri Ji), an important celebration marking the harvest season.
  • Title-taking systems, such as Ozo, Nze, and Eze titles, which denote leadership and achievements.
  • Marriage customs, which involve traditional rites like the “Iku aka” (knocking ceremony) and “Igba nkwu” (wine-carrying ceremony).

While many Igbos today are Christians, traditional customs still play a vital role in their social and spiritual lives.
