What are the taboos in Igbo culture?
Igbo culture has a rich set of traditional values and beliefs, and taboos (called nso ala) play a crucial role in maintaining moral, spiritual, and communal order. Violating a taboo is considered an offense not just against society, but also against the gods and ancestors. Here are some notable Igbo taboos:
🔴 1. Incest and Marrying Within One’s Kindred
- It is a serious taboo to marry someone from your umunna (paternal lineage).
- Even distant relatives traced through the same male ancestor are off-limits for marriage.
🔴 2. Desecrating the Earth (Ala)
- The Earth goddess (Ala) is sacred. Acts like murder, incest, and stealing from sacred lands are seen as offenses against Ala.
- Urinating or defecating in sacred groves or ancestral lands is also taboo.
🔴 3. Killing Twins (Historic)
- In pre-colonial times, twins were considered unnatural and were tragically abandoned or killed.
- This practice has been abolished, but it was once a deeply held (though now rejected) taboo.
🔴 4. Suicide
- Taking one’s own life is seen as a grave sin and a defilement of the land.
- The body of someone who commits suicide is not buried in the ancestral land or with proper rites.
🔴 5. Eating Certain Animals
- Some animals (like python, which is sacred in some Igbo areas) are never killed or eaten.
- Killing a python is a serious taboo in places like Idemili and often requires elaborate atonement.
🔴 6. Stealing From a Sacred Shrine or Market
- Markets (ahia) are considered spiritually protected. Stealing from one is a spiritual crime, not just a legal one.
🔴 7. Menstruating Women Entering Sacred Spaces
- Traditionally, menstruating women are seen as ritually unclean and are forbidden from entering shrines or participating in sacred rites during that time.
🔴 8. Disrespecting Elders and Sacred Titles
- Insulting a titled man (Nze, Ozo, etc.) or elder is not only rude but considered a spiritual offense.
🔴 9. Speaking Evil of the Dead
- Once a person is buried, it is taboo to speak ill of them — regardless of what they did while alive. The dead are respected to avoid invoking curses or ancestral wrath.
🔴 10. Breaking Oaths or Curses
- Making a false oath or breaking a sacred vow (especially in ancestral shrines) is considered one of the worst taboos and can bring misfortune or death.
